For Customers

Consumers are looking for healthier options — from the foods they eat to how they exercise and even the way they commute to work. But they also don’t want to give up the joy that comes from eating the foods they love. By offering lower-fat versions of your most popular foods, you can help consumers make healthier choices that still taste good, and put the joy back in eating. Olestra allows food manufacturers to expand lower-fat and reduced calorie product offerings to meet consumer demands, without sacrificing taste or consistency. Products made with olestra are lower-fat, lower-calorie and contribute zero trans fats and zero cholesterol. Because they taste and bake the same as full-fat versions, foods with olestra don’t leave consumers wanting more, unlike many other low-fat options. In fact, studies have shown that people who consume olestra foods don’t eat more to offset the loss in caloriesi. With nearly seven billion servings sold since 1996, olestra is the right choice for food manufacturers seeking to provide consumers with healthier options. How important are low-fat foods?

In 2011, consumers told the America Dietetic Association that they were likely to increase their consumption of low-fat foods. In fact, low-fat foods were one of the top five categories in which consumers were most likely to increase consumption.

In a 2011 Harris poll, nearly half of the consumers surveyed said that fat content in food is “very important.” That’s 50 percent more than those who rated the presence of high-fructose corn syrup as important, and nearly five times more than those who thought gluten content was important.

Similarly, in a 2010 survey by the International Dairy Deli Bakery Association, two-thirds of respondents have made an effort to reduce fat in their diets. This is not surprising given that 64 percent have at least one member in their household that is concerned about being overweight. Eighty percent of those surveyed said nutritional labels are an important factor in deciding what bakery products to buy.

Despite their interest in reduced fat and calorie foods, consumers do not want to compromise on taste or satisfaction, especially when it comes to treating themselves or their family. Our research illustrates that using olestra, it is possible to create very compelling food concepts that consumers love. For those consumers who long for a great tasting, indulgent, reduced-calorie treat, the use of olestra does not present a barrier to trying these foods. In fact, when shown ingredient labels for these foods, three times as many people commented on the use of sugar and/or sweeteners than they did olestra.

What is olestra?

Olestra is a zero-calorie fat substitute used in place of high-fat cooking oils, shortening and butter in lower-fat snack foods and baked goods. Foods with olestra have the same great taste and consistency as traditional full-fat foods, but have fewer calories, lower total and saturated fat content and zero trans fats. Healthy living

How does it work?

Olestra is made starting from natural ingredients, including vegetable oil. It is processed in a special way, to create cooking oil or shortening that looks, cooks and tastes like ordinary fat, but because of its size, is not broken down by the body. Science

Proven success with olestra

Busken Bakery in Cincinnati, OH has successfully used Olean for several years to improve its healthy product offerings for its customers. Witnessing an increase in health conscious consumers and in an effort to combat the impact of health concerns such as diabetes and heart disease, the Busken Bakery team sought to diversify its lower-fat offerings, while maintaining its reputation for great tasting baked goods.

With Olean, Busken was able to recreate the great taste of its famous iced cookie, but with half the fat and zero trans fat. Launched in January 2010, the Busken Bakery Skinny Cookie has become one of the bakery’s best-selling items, without negatively impacting sales of its original cookie. Olean has allowed Busken Bakery to expand into a new market of lower-fat foods and increase its sales potential.

“Cookies are one of our major categories but we saw a demand for healthy options. Using Olean, we were able to create a cookie that has the same flavor as our famous original cookie, but with half the fat.”

Front of Package Labeling

Government regulators are updating front of package labeling to help better inform consumers about the foods they eat. A number of formats have been proposed, including a voluntary program adopted by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) that calories, saturated fat and sugar be clearly marked on all packaging. Front of package labeling will make it much easier for consumers to see the difference between lower-fat and full-fat options — good news for lower-fat foods made with olestra. Recent consumer research conducted by P&G found that front of package labeling will discourage purchases of high calorie and saturated fat foods in favor of those lower in calories and fat.

Olestra has zero-calories, unlike butter and oil that pack a high caloric punch, yet has the same great taste. That means foods made with olestra taste and cook up just as well as those with butter or oil, but will show lower fat and fewer calories on front of package labeling, making them more desirable to consumers.
